GitHub has formally launched Enterprise Managed Users (EMUs), a new form of user account for GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHEC) clients that can be provisioned and managed centrally by means of the company’s identity provider (IdP).

This represents portion of GitHub’s broader efforts to transition software program development away from nearby environments and into the cloud, the most apparent other instance becoming its browser-based Codespaces platform which it lately launched for enterprises.

GitHub’s EMUs, which have been initial announced in private beta last year, give admins granular manage more than GitHub accounts across the enterprise by tying GitHub Enterprise Cloud to their IdP of decision, such as Google, Microsoft, or Okta.

This implies that admins can build (or suspend) user accounts for their workers by means of a linked IdP, and handle user profile information (e.g. username, show name, or e-mail address) and GitHub teams membership.

GitHub EMUs are specifically notable from a safety point of view, as repositories connected with EMU accounts are automatically blocked from creating private code publicly visible, which goes some way toward averting human error.

And since accounts assistance single sign-on (SSO) and are synchronized with a company’s corporate ID, this implies that it is generally clear who is collaborating with who — this is probably more significant in the present worldwide landscape, provided that million of workers are working remotely and may well in no way have basically met their collaborators face-to-face.
